Résumé
Jim et Hilda Bloggs forment un couple heureux ; ils vivent leur retraite dans leur petit cottage du Sussex, au cœur de la campagne anglaise. Confiant dans leur gouvernement et profondément patriotiques, lorsque la radio annonce l'imminence d'un bombardement atomique, ils appliquent les consignes de la radio, consignes dignes de 1940: s'abriter à la cave, obturer les fenêtres avec des matelas, etc.
Hilda, de nature un peu plus anxieuse que son mari s'inquiète régulièrement de ne plus pouvoir sortir, de ne pas avoir eu de nouvelles de ses enfants, etc. Heureusement pour elle, Jim le flegmatique la rassure en lui répétant les communiqués de la radio: il y aura des vents de près de 500 km, mais ne seront plus qu'à 200 lorsqu'ils toucheront les côtes anglaises, c'est normal que les enfants ne téléphonent pas puisque le gouvernement à restreint l'usage du téléphone, etc. Lente agonie, conséquence de la guerre nucléaire, dont les victimes elle même ne se rendent pas ou ne veulent pas de rendre compte de la gravité.
Commentaire
Film primé au Festival d'Annecy en 1988, Quand souffle le vent est un véritable pamphlet contre les armes atomiques et l'endoctrinement religieux, militaire et patriotique. Diffusé sur Arte dans le cadre d'une soirée Théma sur la guerre atomique, ce film dérange et bouscule le spectateur comme peu de films arrivent à le faire. Pourquoi? Probablement par la force du récit, adapté du roman de Raymond Brigg, et de la réalisation qui mélange prises de vues réelles (pour les décors) et animation traditionnelle pour les personnages.
Ce film est à ranger parmi les plus grandes œuvres du cinéma d'animation et mériterait d'être diffusé plus souvent.
